Programed to Love You!
If you’ve ever been pleased by an algorithm or persuaded by an advertisement, take a moment to consider the dark implications these instruments suggest about what your brain is made of. Honestly, I’m unsure why I put “if” in the opening sentence. Of course, you’ve been entertained by robots and convinced by ads. In fact, I’d be kinda pleased if the algorithm is bringing us together now. It's an unlikely proposition, though, as I’m not the type for whom it typically sings its mysterious song. In any case, no derision is implied in my soft allegation; it’s simply a recognition that we’re all in the same cognitive boat. We’re predictable, programable, and utterly convinced most of the time that we are neither.
If it makes you feel any better, I’ll tell you about my most recent brush with the terrible force* - one of many terms I will use throughout this missive instead of “algorithm,” mostly because I often misspell it. Seeing a program-drawn red line appear under the word feels extra creepy while writing about the presence of programs in my life. Perhaps highlighting my digital credulity will help you recognize your own or make it easier to forgive yourself for having it. It might also help prevent more of it in the future. I also want to gush over a strange gift from the unseen hand of the Baphomet.*
